Hola hola, its Tati! And yes, as the title reads I did rent friends. Well sorta haha. I mean I did pay someone to hang out with me all day, take pictures of me, and even fed them. Not to mention I chose them in an app after reviewing tons of other profiles based on their looks, interests, age, ratings, price and how much I thought we’d get along. Until BOOM we matched! Jk jk you don’t match in this app. Sorry I’ve clearly been on dating apps too long.
You see, a couple years ago when I was planning my volunteering trip to South Africa (CLICK HERE) I had a free day in Port Elizabeth, and on my way back home, a 12 hour layover in Capetown. Of course now, years later, I don’t feel the need for a service like this, but for a new solo traveler this was a great option. Months ahead of my trip I did enormous research on traveling alone. Through many blogs and Youtube videos I came across an app called Showaround. Showaround is a platform where you meet locals, who will do just that, show you around. Think of it as a tour guide without the geeky guy holding up a flag and a group of retired old ladies following behind. (nothing against old retired ladies traveling the world!). Even if you’re a good solo traveler, if you’re short on time, having a local’s knowledge could be very beneficial.
With this app you are meeting regular folks who are trying to make some extra cash, including many university students. This was something that I was more than happy to contribute to. Especially in countries like South Africa, where the unemployment rate is almost 29% (US unemployment rate is 3.6% for reference), so you can just imagine the chances of a Uni student trying to make some cash.
The app is used worldwide in over 215 countries and 11,533 cities. You just download the app, input the city and dates of your visit, and it will show you the locals who are available. Pretty similar to a dating app, each profile has various pictures of the person, their interests, languages and additional to that, areas of the city they can show you, and of course pricing. The app also provides reviews from other travelers, to make your decision easier. Prices seemed extremely affordable from $5-$15 an hour as average (in South Africa).
For my first leg of Showaround experience, after many swipes I opted to reach out to Jayde to show me around the “windy city”, Port Elizabeth. This was her profile:
She looked like a fun girl and someone who I could enjoy my day with. So the initial convo went something like this:
We then started communication through Whatsapp about the specifics of what I wanted to do etc. Now, just as you would (or I would lol) stalk a guy you would go on a first date with, I stalked the crap out of this girl just in case lol. Again this is my paranoid side coming out. But hey better safe than sorry. Somehow I got access to her social media and was able to confirm she was real (Jayde, I know you’re reading this, sorry lol). Also for safety reasons I screenshotted her instagram and pictures, and gave this info to my best friend in case of anything lol. I might be showing my true colors here a little too strong but hey, it was my safety. Getting closer to the date we had an idea of what our day was gonna look like. As far as pricing was concerned, I did not want to be worried about the times, plus my intentions were to hang out with a “friend” and finish the night partying with her. We ended up agreeing to a flat fee of $100 from noon till whatever time. Also needless to say everything was covered by me; ubers, food, attractions etc. All this, you agree on prior to setting a price. Now that you know how I “rented” my friend Jayde, let’s jump into our full day in Port Elizabeth!

What to do, where to go, where to stay, and how expensive is it?
During my one night stay in PE, I stayed at The Boardwalk Hotel. This is a 5 star hotel and the most luxurious in PE, at the moment of my visit (I still think it is, don’t quote me). It sits right on the beach, has an infinity pool, casino, spa, some of the best restaurants in town etc. The price per night was around $175, which to be a 5 star hotel is actually pretty affordable. Needless to say, I was not on a budget nor was I backpacking. I don’t even think I knew what backpacking or traveling on a budget was then lol. The hotel sent for me to be picked me up from the airport. Yes, I had a fancy chofer hold a sign up with my name on it…. fancy butt. I recommend them 100%!

Jayde and I had decided to meet at noon at the hotel lobby. She was the sweetest thing! We bonded right away, and I knew I had made the right decision choosing her. Side thought; y’all know how there’s apps out there for making friends? I’m sure this is how first “friend dates” go lol. My friends back home teased me so much when I told them I had paid two girls to hang out with me a whole day. They joked and said I was gonna be someone’s sugar mama for the day, paying them for their time and their food lmao. When I arrived at the hotel, my room was not ready so I quickly changed in the lobby’s restroom and we headed for our day. Jayde, actually had a car (noted in her profile) which saved me a lot of uber money! We headed for lunch to a place called Grass Roof Farm Stall, located on Olive Tree Farm, recommended by her. The place was super cute, outdoorsy, with greenery all around and of course, a grass roof. The food was also AHHHH-mazing! They focus on healthy organic food… we deviated from that and had some bomb pizza and their famous milkshakes (Clearly pre-vegan Tati)….not just any milkshake. Take a look.

After lunch we continued our next adventure. If you look up things to do in PE, visiting the sand dunes always comes up. Not only are the sand dunes beautiful, but they are on the beach. These were the first sand dunes I’ve visited and to make the experience more memorable, we went horse riding through them. I booked our 2 hour beach horse ride with Heavenly Stables. The Price was 450 ZAR (~30 USD) per person.
I remember when I got there the guide was like “So you come from Texas to ride a horse in South Africa?”. Well contrary to foreigner’s beliefs, we don’t ride horses to work in Texas lol. As a matter of fact the last time I had ridden a horse was probably in my third grade camping field trip….. and it showed ha! I thought all I had to do was just sit there and I’d be taken on a stroll enjoying the views. Not the case.The views were indeed extraordinary. You go from lush greenery to these beautiful sand dunes and continue along the beachfront. But needless to say I got bruised up all in my thighs and then some. Lesson learned. That was my fault for saying I knew how to ride, cause I couldn’t let Texas down ha.
The Donkin Reserve and Route 67 were up next. This is a popular attraction in PE featuring the famous stone pyramid, the lighthouse and 67 pieces of art inspired by Nelson Mandela. Route 67 symbolized Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of work dedicated to the freedom of South Africa.
Before dinner, we went back to the hotel to shower and get a bit dolled up. I made dinner reservations at Ginger The Restaurant, also located at the boardwalk. The food was top notch. I had the trio carpaccio to start; fine silvers of South African game, crocodile, warthog and springbok. Filet of Ostrich was my main course and of course I wrapped the meal with a lava pudding dessert (cause you know, volcanoes are life). If you know 2020 Tatiana, you are probably shocked at my meal choices, but again I wasn’t born vegan. I won’t deny, however I’m a bit amused as I type this. I traveled to South Africa for an animal conservation project, and I was having game on my plate. Anywho, this was a fine dining restaurant. Again one of the best ones in the city and I was shocked at how affordable this meal was. For two appetizers, two main dishes, two cocktails and two desserts the total came to $731.00 ZAR, which is about $48.00 USD. with the hotel and fine dining pricing you can get an idea of how affordable traveling to South Africa can be, and this is on the higher end of things.
This concluded my day in PE. Grandma Tati had plans for nightlife, but didnt pull through……Shocker. Next up, Capetown!

So again, it was a date! Pricing arrangement went the same as with Jayde. Flat fee for the day. Not sure if yall remember Ellie, from my Voluntouring blog . She ended up joining me and Amber for the day. We flew in at about 11am, I left my luggage (all 3 pieces of them smh) in storage at the airport. This is always a lifesaver and 98% of airports will offer this service. Especially if you’re like me and plan your trips around long layovers. Ellie’s parents (The awesome doctors who were doing research on HIV per my volunteer blog), who I met at the airport, gave us a ride to meet up with Amber. It was easy to spot her with her fun blonde curls, big blue eyes and her amazing and very authentic sense of style. She greeted me with a big smile, a bear hug and omg a gift *tears*. A beautiful yellow and green crop top she had picked out for me. How sweet was that!? (Sorry I can’t promise you, your experience with Showaround will include a new item to your wardrobe too!)
Our tour of Cape started with a beautiful and serene stroll through the popular local Seapoint Promenade walk. It was full of cyclists, skaters, joggers, and just families enjoying the beautiful weather along the coast. I filled her in about my volunteer work I had just finished doing at the safari. I can’t recall if it was her or Jayde who mentioned it to me, that it was very rare for locals to have the signature Safari experience that South Africa is known for. It’s ridiculously priced for a local to actually afford it. Which is really sad and mind blowing.
We headed out for brunch at the V & A Waterfront, a must attraction in the city. It’s a beautiful big shopping center with shops, over 80 restaurants, street performers and the most iconic backdrop of *drumroll* …..the effing Table Mountain! The most iconic landmark of Capetown (also one of the wonders of nature). We went for seafood and I enjoyed some oysters and fish tacos. Oysters a 10. Tacos…well I’m from Texas, and have high standards that were not met, but hey, beautiful Table Mountain in the back made up for mediocre tacos. We spent some time walking around the waterfront doing some shopping and just enjoying the street performers dancing and playing South African tunes.
After walking out of lunch, Table Mountain was next. The main feature of this mountain, and the reason it stands out is because of its level plateau that lays across 2 miles from side to side. You also have the Devil’s Peak on its East and the Lion’s head to its West. The mountain is Silurian/ Ordovician sandstone (for my fellow geogeeks out there). I must also mention that Table Mountain was my first of the two Wonders of Nature I’ve visited. The other ones include the Amazons, Iguazu Falls, Halong Bay (my second), Komodo, Jeju Island, and Puerto Princesa. Only five to go!
Sadly, because of time and safety (We were warned about mugging incidents that happen more than often) it was not gonna be a hike for us. Instead they have cable carts that take you all the way to the “flat table” for about $6 USD. It’s about a 5 minutes ride, and about 2510 ft long. The carts are pretty packed (canned sardines literally!) but stay close to the window. The views are tooooo dieeeee forrrrrrr. Not even gonna lie at some point it feels like you’re going so vertically up, it’s kinda scary but the view makes up for it. When you finally make it up, you are standing at an elevation of about 3558 ft. There’s about 2 miles for you to walk around and catch all the amazing views not only of the other mountain ranges but the sea wrapping the Table Top. It was such a beautiful day with no clouds in the sky. You could admire how the sea and the sky blended together in perfect harmony. I could really try my best to keep describing the views, but thankfully I got plenty of pictures. I don’t think they fully do it justice, but you can get an idea.
There was not enough time to actually bathe on the beach but we did walk around Camp’s Bay Beach. I’ve been to plenty of beaches in my travel adventures and this one is definitely worth mentioning. You have the mountains, beach and the beautiful color of the sea all in one sight. It gives off a very Californian vibe. To conclude our day we did some Sunday funday drinking and grabbed some bites at La Parada del Mar, a beach side restaurant where we hung out in the terrace enjoying the amazing views where I got the amazing opportunity to get to know Amber a little better and be able to ask her, a local about issues of the country like politics, economy, education and a big one in SA, racism. Keep in mind segregation did not finish until 1994 in South Africa. That was in my lifetime. To be able to spend your afternoon having a drink with someone who lived and grew up in a different “norm” than the one you did, is one of the best gifts traveling can give you. The true beauty behind traveling, besides the landscapes, beaches, food and instagram pictures, is exactly that! Hearing about life from a local’s perspective.
Shortly after it was time to say goodbye to South Africa. I ordered an Uber, gave a hug to my new friend abroad and thanked the universe for the new relationships and bonds I had created with beautiful souls. That’s some of the most magical energy you can bring back home with you. Believe it or not, now years later I’m still in touch with Jayde and Amber. I actually almost met up with Amber when I visited Hanoi. Not as a Showaround “rented friend”, but genuinely to catch up with an old friend. Unfortunately something came up and it wasn’t possible, but still comes to show how awesome it is to have friends all over the world!
Rente Una Amiga En El Extranjero…O Dos.
Hola hola, es Tati! Y si, así fue. Tal cual lo leen. Prácticamente le pague a alguien por su compañía, para que pasara el dia conmigo, me tomara fotos, y hasta la invite a varias comidas. Cabe mencionar que la encontré en una aplicación, después de revisar varias cuentas. Para seleccionarla, tuve en cuenta sus fotos, su edad, su precio, sus gustos, y sus reviews. Antes que se hagan ideas. No, no me meti a ninguna página de damas de compañia jaja.
A ver me retrocedo un toque y les explico. Hace un par de años cuando estaba planeando mi viaje a Sudáfrica de voluntaria (Lee el blog acá!), sabía que iba a tener un dia libre en Port Elizabeth y otro en Capetown. Obvio hoy en dia, con mi experiencia viajando sola, no acudiría a un servicio como este pero para principiantes que no se sienten aún muy cómodos viajando solos, esta es una muy buena opción. Meses antes de mi viaje busqué mucha información en el internet sobre consejos y tips de viajar sola como mujer, y más en un país tan desconocido para mí como lo era Sudáfrica. Entre blogs y videos de Youtube descubrí una aplicación llamada Showaround. Showaround es una plataforma donde puedes conocer gente local de la ciudad que vayas a visitar, para ser tu guía turístico personal. Tal cual como un guia tradicional, restando el chico sosteniendo una bandera, con un grupo de ancianas jubiladas siguiéndolo en fila (nada en contra de las viejitas jubiladas viajeras!). Con la excepción de que sería una experiencia totalmente personalizada a ti. Hasta para viajeros solos con experiencia, siento que este servicio puede ser muy útil, si estás corto de tiempo y no alcanzaste tal vez a planear tu viaje y las cosas por hacer en tu ciudad de destino.
En esta aplicación estás conociendo gente común y corriente, no necesariamente alguien que estudio turismo. La mayoría de las personas que vi en la aplicación son estudiantes que hacen esto en su tiempo libre para ganarse un dinero extra. En este caso me dio gusto atribuir a esta cause, ya que en países tales como Sudáfrica donde la tasa de desempleo abarca alrededor del 29% de la población (para referencia, en EEUU la tasa es de 3.6%). Con esos números, se podrán imaginar lo difícil que es para un estudiante de universidad conseguir algún empleo, sin entrar en detalles de cuánto podrían ganar.
La aplicación es usada alrededor del mundo en 215 países a mas de 11,533 ciudades. Solo tienes que bajar la aplicacion Showaround, pones la ciudad y la fecha que necesitas el servicio , y te muestra la gente que está disponible. Si alguna vez has usado alguna, es muy parecida a las aplicaciones de conocer pareja jaja. Veras fotos de la persona, sus hobbies, su estilo, los idiomas que habla, y a veces especifican cuales son sus lugares favoritos para llevarte a conocer. Para hacer tu decicion mas facil tambien encuentras reviews de gente que ya a usado los servicios de la persona. Los precios también me parecieron muy económicos desde $5 a $15 la hora (USD) en Sudáfrica.
Mi primer experiencia con Showaround fue buscando a alguien para mi dia en Port Elizabeth. Estaba buscando una chica mas o menos de mi edad y que pudiera compartir gustos, ya que planeaba pasar el dia con ella, tal cual como rentar una amiga a tu gusto. Después de ver varios perfiles me decidí por Jayde. Este es su perfil:

Ya después de esto pasamos la conversación a Whatsapp y especificamos bien los detalles de mi viaje y lo que quería hacer. Ahora mis amores, asi como lo deberían hacer con un chico que conozcan en una aplicación de parejas, asi mismito deben hacer su investigación sobre la persona jaja. Con esta chica literal le encontré sus redes sociales etc. obvio para no solo verificar que era real jaja si no que tambien le deje esta informacion a mi mejor amiga por si las moscas. Son simplemente pasos cautelosos que se deben tomar por la seguridad de uno mismo.
Acercándonos más a la fecha de mi llegada, ya teníamos una buena idea de lo que íbamos hacer ese dia. Algunas idea puestas por mi y otras por ella. Sobre el tema del precio, yo quise hacerlo muy sencillo, ya que planeaba estar con ella casi todo el dia y seguir la rumba también por la noche. No quería ponerme a contar horas y decidimos una tarifa por el día completo de $100 (USD). Dejó claro, este no era un viaje de bajo presupuesto y estoy segura que podría haber negociado algo más bajo. También quedamos en que yo le pagaría las entradas a atracciones, comida, y todo lo que gastaramos. Ya que tienen una buen idea de cómo “alquile” mi amiga por el dia, ¡saltemos a nuestro día completo en Port Elizabeth!
Un día en Port Elizabeth
¿Qué hacer, dónde ir, dónde quedarse, y qué tan caro es?
Durante mi estadía en Port Elizabeth, me hospedé en el Boardwalk Hotel. Este es un hotel de 5 estrellas y el más lujoso de PE, en el momento de mi visita (aún creo que lo es). Se encuentra justo en la playa, tiene una piscina infinita, un casino, un spa, etc. El precio por noche era de unos 175 dólares (USD), que en realidad para ser un hotel de 5 estrellas es bastante asequible. No hace falta decir que no estaba haciendo un viaje de bajo presupuesto (como suelo hacerlos ahora) ni tampoco iba de mochilera. Es mas, nisiquiera creo que sabía lo que era ir de mochilera o viajar con presupuesto en ese momento. El hotel me recogió en el aeropuerto. Sí, tenía un elegante chofer que sostenía un cartel con mi nombre en él… muy fancy yo jaja. La verdad que me sentí sumamente cómoda y la atención fue 10 de 10 ¡Los recomiendo al 100%!

Jayde y yo decidimos reunirnos al mediodía en el lobby del hotel. Hicimos click enseguida, y supe que había tomado la decisión correcta al elegir. ¿Ven que hoy en día hay aplicaciones para hacer amigos? Estoy seguro de que más o menos así son las primeras “citas con amigos” jaja. Mis amigas en casa se burlaron tanto de mí cuando les confesé que le había pagado a dos chicas para que salieran conmigo. Me dijeron que iba a ser la sugar mama de alguien por el día jaja y pues si.
Cuando llegué al hotel, mi habitación no estaba lista, así que me cambié en el baño del lobby y comenzamos nuestro día. Jayde tenía carro, cosa que me ahorró mucho dinero! Fuimos a almorzar a un lugar llamado Grass Roof Farm Stall, situado en Olive Tree Farm, recomendado por ella. El lugar era súper lindo, al aire libre, con vegetación alrededor y por supuesto, un techo de grama. La comida estuvo también EEEEES-pectacular. Se centran en comida orgánica y saludable… nos desviamos un toque de eso y pedimos unas pizzas full bomba y sus famosos batidos (claramente hablo de Tati pre-vegana)… no cualquier batido. Echen ojo!.
Después del almuerzo continuamos hacia nuestra siguiente aventura. Si buscas cosas que hacer en Puerto Elizabeth, siempre surge visitar sus famosas dunas de arena. No sólo son hermosas, sino que están justo en la playa. Estas fueron las primeras dunas de arena que he visitado y decidí que para hacer la experiencia más memorable íbamos a montar caballo. Reservé nuestro paseo a caballo por la playa de 2 horas con la compañía Heavenly Stables. El precio era de 450 ZAR (~30 USD) por persona.
Recuerdo que cuando llegue el guía me pregunto muy confundido, “¿Vienes de Texas para montar a caballo en Sudáfrica?” jaja. Bueno, contrario a las creencias de los extranjeros, el caballo no es el método de transporte más utilizado en Texas! Jaja De hecho, creo que la última vez que monté a caballo fue probablemente en mi excursión de camping de tercer grado…. y se me notaba. Pensé que todo lo que tenía que hacer era sentarme y disfrutar mi paseo con las bellas vistas. Claramente, no es el caso. Sin duda alguna las vistas eran espectaculares. Pasas de los verdes frondosos a las hermosas dunas de arena y continúas por toda la orilla de la playa. No hace falta decir que me quedaron moretones por toda la pierna y de más. Lección aprendida. Esa fue mi culpa por aparentar saber montar caballo, porque no podía defraudar a Texas.
La Reserva Donkin y la Ruta 67 fueron las siguientes paradas. Esta es una atracción popular en PE que incluye la famosa pirámide de piedra, el faro y 67 piezas de arte inspiradas por Nelson Mandela. La Ruta 67 simboliza los 67 años de trabajo de Nelson Mandela dedicados a la libertad de Sudáfrica.
Ya iba siendo tiempo de cenar. Volvimos al hotel para ducharnos y arreglarnos un poco. Hice reservas para cenar en el restaurante The Ginger, también situado en el Boardwalk. La comida en realidad era de la mejor calidad. Comencé con el trío de carpaccio; finos cortes de caza Sudafricana, cocodrilo, jabalí salvaje y gacela. Como plato principal me decidí por el filete de avestruz y por supuesto para rematar termine con un postre de pudín de lava (porque ya saben, para mi no hay viajes sin volcanes). Si conoces a la Tatiana del 2020, probablemente te sorprendas de mis elecciones de comida. Pero aja, no nací vegana. No negaré que si me sorprende un poco al escribir esto. Viajé a Sudáfrica para un proyecto de conservación de los animales, y tenía la caza sudafricana en mi plato. Ah bueno!
Esta fue una salida a un restaurante de lujo, y me sorprendió lo económico que salió ( a comparación de Estados Unidos). Por dos aperitivos, dos platos fuertes, dos cócteles y dos postres el total fue de 731 ZAR, que es equivalente a unos 48 USD. Con el precio del hotel y de la cena puedes hacerte una idea de lo rentable que puede ser viajar a Sudáfrica.
Esto concluye mi día en PE. La abuela Tati tenía planes de rumba, pero se fue derecho a su camita….vaya sorpresa. Ahora sigue Capetown!

De nuevo, ¡Era una cita! El acuerdo de precios fue el mismo que con Jayde. Una tarifa fija por todo el día. Si se acuerdan de Ellie, de mi blog de Voluntouring, ella terminó acompañándonos ese día. Aterrizamos a las 11am. Dejé mi equipaje (3 piezas y media, yo se me avergüenza) en el almacenamiento del aeropuerto. Se los juro que este servicio es lo mejor. Me atrevo a decir que un 98% de los aeropuertos lo ofrecen. Te salva la vida y te saca de apuros, si eres como yo y planeas tus viajes con largas escalas! Los padres de Ellie (los increíbles doctores que estaban realizando investigaciones sobre el VIH en su viaje por el mundo, de los que les hable en mi otro blog), a quienes conocí en el aeropuerto, nos llevaron al punto de encuentro donde quedamos de encontrarnos con Amber. Fue fácil distinguirla. Con sus rizos rebeldes, sus grandes ojos azules y su asombroso y muy auténtico estilo al vestir. Me saludó con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja, un abrazo de oso y un regalito. Una hermosa blusita crop amarilla y verde que había escogido para regalarme (Lo siento, no puedo prometerles el mismo trato con su Showaround. No es garantizado que también incluirá un nuevo artículo en su armario jaja)
Nuestro recorrido por el Cape comenzó con un hermoso y sereno paseo por el popular Seapoint Promenade. Estaba lleno de ciclistas, patinadores, joggers, y de familias disfrutando del hermoso clima a lo largo de la costa. La puse al día sobre mi trabajo de voluntaria que acababa de terminar en el safari. No puedo recordar si fue ella o Jayde quien me lo mencionó, que era muy raro que los habitantes de la zona tuvieran la experiencia de visitar y hacer un safari, cuál es el característico sello de Sudáfrica. Es un costo absurdo y ridículo para un local poder pagar. Lo cual es realmente triste y desconcertante, pero bueno como mucho en este mundo, es un asunto de política y dinero.
Nos dirigimos a almorzar en el V & A Waterfront, una atracción turística obligatoria en la ciudad. Es un hermoso y gran centro comercial con tiendas, más de 80 restaurantes, artistas callejeros, artesanos y el más icónico telón de fondo ……la famosa Table Mountain! Cual es el monumento más emblemático de Capetown (también una de las maravillas de la naturaleza). Nos decidimos por comida de mar para el almuerzo. Pedí ostras y taquitos de pescado. Ostras, un 10 de 10. Tacos… bueno soy de Texas y tengo altos estándares que no se cumplieron, pero hey la hermosa Table Mountain en el fondo compensó por los tacos. Después del almuerzo, pasamos un tiempo caminando por el muelle, haciendo algunas compras y disfrutando de los artistas ambulantes que bailaban y tocaban música sudafricana.
Después de caminar la comida, seguía Table Mountain. La principal característica de esta montaña, y la razón por la cual se destaca es por su plataforma plana que se extiende a lo largo de 2 millas de lado a lado, la mesa. También tiene el Devil’s Peak en el este y Lion’s Head en el oeste. La montaña es de sandstone Silúrica/Ordovícica (para mis colegas geólogos). Debo mencionar que Table Mountain fue la primera de las dos maravillas de la naturaleza que he visitado. Las otras incluyen las Amazonas, las Cataratas de Iguazú, la Bahía de Halong (mi segunda), Komodo, la Isla de Jeju y Puerto Princesa. Me faltan cinco!
Lamentablemente, debido al tiempo y a la inseguridad (nos advirtieron sobre los incidentes de asalto que suceden a menudo) no iba a ser un hike para nosotros. En lugar de ello, tienen teleféricos que te llevan hasta la cima por 6 dólares. Es un trayecto de unos 5 minutos, y de 2510 pies de largo. Los teleféricos están repletos (¡literalmente sardinas enlatadas!) pero si te paras cerca de la ventana, las vistas son de ataque de lo hermosas! Aunque no miento, en algún momento se siente como si estuvieras subiendo tan verticalmente, que da un poco de miedo, pero la vista lo recompensa. Cuando por fin logras subir a la mesa, estás a una altura de 3558 pies. Hay alrededor de 2 millas para que camines alrededor y disfrutes de las increíbles vistas no sólo de las otras cordilleras sino del mar que rodea a Tabletop. Nos hizo tan lindo el día, ni una nube en el cielo. Se podía admirar cómo el mar y el cielo se fusionaban en perfecta armonía. Podría hacer todo lo posible para seguir describiendo las vistas, pero por suerte tomé muchas fotos. No creo que le hagan mucha la justicia, pero con ellas se pueden hacer una buena idea.
No tuvimos suficiente tiempo para bañarnos en el mar, pero sí nos dimos una vuelta por la playa de Camp’s Bay. La playa es hermosa. Tienes playa, mar y montañas todo en una sola vista. Es una vibra muy Californiana. Para terminar las últimas horas de mi visita, hicimos un poco de “Sunday funday”. Fuimos a picar unos antojitos y tomarnos unos tragos en el restaurante La Parada del Mar. Para aprovechar el hermoso atardecer nos quedamos en la terraza disfrutando la vista hacia el mar. Este tiempo fue muy especial porque me dio la oportunidad de conocer a Amber un poco más. Entre tantas cosas, poder preguntarle sobre temas del país como la política, economía, educación y uno de los temas más controversiales e importantes en Sudáfrica, el racismo. Tengan en cuenta que la segregación no terminó hasta el año 1994 en Sudáfrica. Osea, esto es un tema que estamos acostumbrados hablar de el como un pasado muy lejano, antes de haber nacido. Tal vez en las épocas nuestros abuelos. Pero no, aquí sucedió durante nuestra existencia. Es muy difícil para alguien de mi mundo poder asimilar esa realidad. Poder pasar la tarde tomándote una cerveza con alguien que vivió y creció en una ” normalidad” tan diferente a la tuya, es uno de los mejores regalos que te puede dar un viaje. La riqueza que ganas al viajar, además de los paisajes, las playas, la comida y las fotos para instagram, es exactamente eso. Conocer como se ve el mundo desde la perspectiva de otros zapatos.
Poco después llegó el momento de despedirme de Sudáfrica. Pedí un Uber, le di un abrazo a mi nuevo amiga y le agradecí al universo por la oportunidad de crear nuevos lazos y experiencias compartidas con seres humanos tan bonitos. Esa es una de las energías más mágicas que puedes traer a casa contigo. Aunque no lo crean, años después sigo en contacto con Jayde y Amber. De hecho, casi me encuentro con Amber cuando visité Vietnam. No como un “amiga rentada” de Showaround, sino genuinamente para saludarme con una vieja amiga. Desafortunadamente algo surgió a última hora y no fue posible, pero aún así demuestra lo increíble que es tener amigos en todo el mundo!
